Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) Information: History and Facilities
The mid-sixties was when the construction of Jacksonville Airport started, being completed three years later in 1968. Built as a replacement to the nearby old Imeson Airport, which had become too small for jet-drive aircraft, Jacksonville's new airfield soon began offering a range of domestic flights.
By the eighties and now known officially as Jacksonville International Airport (JAX), passenger levels had reached more than two million each year, prompting the need for a series of major improvements. Boeing jet-powered aircraft soon became a major fixture, and cargo flights rose sharply. Particularly notable was the year of 1990, when a new terminal building opened, costing in excess of $100 million.
